Say Hello to OMNi’s Tallest Locals: Giraffes Martha & Gilbert
How Two Giraffes Became Edinburgh Icons
Standing tall at the heart of Edinburgh’s OMNi Centre are two of the city’s most beloved residents: Martha and Gilbert, a mother-and-calf giraffe duo sculpted by renowned Scottish artist Helen Denerley.
Installed in July 2005, these striking figures were the winning entry in a local art competition launched to celebrate the area’s heritage following the OMNi build.
Helen’s idea was bold and brilliant: two life-sized giraffes, crafted entirely from scrap metal, gazing out over the city. Her vision? To create a piece that would inspire people to look ahead, think big, and spark conversation for generations. And it worked, the sculpture named Dreaming Spires has become a true Edinburgh icon and a favourite meeting point for locals and visitors alike.
In July 2025, Martha and Gilbert will be celebrating a major milestone as they approach their 20th birthday! It's the perfect moment to reflect on how far they've come.. and to look ahead to all the exciting adventures still to come.
Heads in the Clouds, Hooves on the Ground
Martha, the proud mother, stands at an impressive 6.7 metres (22 feet) tall – and tall enough to peek into a second-floor window! Both giraffes are made entirely from recycled scrap metal, proving that one person’s junk can become another’s masterpiece.
The Poem at Their Feet
Look down and you’ll find a poetic touch circling the base of the sculpture. It’s a line from Roy Campbell’s 1946 poem titled Giraffes:
“A people who live between earth and skies,
Each in his own religious steeple,
Keeping a lighthouse with his eyes.”
A beautiful metaphor for perspective, vision, and grace, qualities that giraffes (and perhaps dreamers) embody effortlessly.
